I’m wanting to try my hand at making some YooToob car-related content. I’ve got a GoPro, a DSLR that’ll shoot video and some extremely basic knowledge on editing. But, I’m concerned about my lack of a microphone. I’d like some sort of clip-on wireless type doohickey, but I’m totally clueless about what’s compatible, decent quality and cheap, since I’m not sure if I’ll be any good at any of this or if all this junk will just get tossed in the bottom of a closet and forgotten in 2 weeks.
So, how do I make with the decent sound recordage for not a big fortune? Talk slowly and don’t use big words. I’ve got the dumbs with technology.

I’ll give that a shot if he doesn’t chime in, o r maybe I’ll just stalk him on Kinja and reply to one of his comments.

The type(s) of mic(s) you’ll want will really depend on how you’re using it. I have a very cheap clip-on microphone that I use to capture good audio from my autocross shenanigans.
If you’re walking around talking to a bunch of different people, look into a shotgun mic that will mount on your DSLR hotshoe.

S hure SM58 or SM57. $100 a pop and are the workhorse of the music industry. Excellent quality and quite versatile.

How much? That seems like more mic than I need, and it might be a bit cumbersome. I’m more looking for a lapel mic that I can easily wear while working on junk in my garage.
Where have all the lightweights gone?

Ignore everything about the Shure SM57. That’s good for voice and nothing else. What you want is a solid shotgun mic that you can mount on your DSLR and/or GoPro (with the right case).
Rode’s mics are the gold standard for content creators because they’re rugged and do great work. The VideoMic Go is $75 on Amazon and will work with your DSLR, GoPro (with the mic adapter), and your smartphone (with a TRS-TRRS cable). https://www.amazon.com/Rode-Lightweight-Microphone-Integrated-Shockmount/dp/B00GQDORA4/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=rode+microphone&qid=1558047531&s=gateway&sr=8-4
